It is the policy of the VLHF to coordinate between Virginia Lions Clubs and the Audiology Department at UVA for Hearing Aid referrals for
Virginia residents unable to afford them if satisfactory assistance cannot be found locally. This year the Department of Audiology at UVA has established new referral procedures. UVA will provide Hearing Aids, fittings, and follow up with the UVA Audiologist to Lion sponsored patients for a fee of $150.

  • All Lions Clubs should first try to work with a local Hearing Aid Dispenser or Audiologist.
  • In order to make this as trouble free as possible, the VLHF will assist any club in locating a local Hearing Aid Dispenser or Audiologist or in coordinating an appointment with the UVA Department of Audiology.
  • If there are no Hearing Aid Dispensers or Audiologists in your area who will work with the Lions Club, then please mail the Hearings Aid Assistance Application (available from VLHF) to the VLHF office and we will refer the person to UVA’s Audiology Department. An appointment will then be made for an examination, and if needed, a hearing aid will be ordered.
  • It takes approximately 2 weeks for the hearing aid to come in from the company. The patient will receive a call from the Audiology Department to schedule a second appointment to be fitted.
  • Following the fitting, the patient is given time to adjust to the hearing aid. UVA will provide a follow up appointment if necessary. UVA will then bill the Lion's Club $150.00 for a new behind-the-ear hearing aid, which carries a one year warranty.
  • If it is found that the patient will benefit better from a type of hearing aid other than what is offered by UVA, a local Hearing Aid Dispenser or Audiologist must be consulted. The local Hearing Aid Dispenser or Audiologist will discuss alternatives and cost with the Lions Club.
  • There are times when UVA itself will refer a patient for assistance to VLHF. In that case, the application and test results are sent to the VLHF office. This information will then be forwarded to a Lion’s Club in the patient’s area for approval and cost sponsorship. Once approved and the application completed, it should be mailed back to VLHF to be forwarded to the Audiology Department at UVA.
